Cerita Che Deen #1

Sawadikap readers, semoga sihat2 selalu, yang sakit makan ubat ye, sekarang kan musim demam kot, panas semacam je.. Che Deen ade kat bangkok sekarang, lepak dalam hotel je nie, nak keluar panas.. panas sangat, kalau pecah kan telur atas jalan tar tu, silap2 boleh je jadi telur goreng..haha

disebabkan bosan sangat, Che Deen nak cerita serba sedikit pasal diri Che Deen sendiri semasa zaman Cinta Monyet~ terdetik nak cerita pasal nie sebab ternampak satu couple siam nie duk makan2 romantik.. romantik camne? makan suap2 la, kaki kat bawah meja tu duk bergesel..haha.. dia orang berbulan madu kat sini kot..

ok la, Che Deen mula bercerita..

AL-KISAH~ TOIYIB~
kat mesin ATM
Che Deen :  awak, jom makan kat restoran tu, saya belanja, nak?

Miss EX : boleh je, dah tengahari nie, perut pun lapar..

Che Deen : ok, makan kat kedai yang ade air-cond la ye..

Miss EX : tak kisah, janji awak bayar la ye =P

kat restoran
Pelayan : order cik..

Che Deen : bagi set nasi ayam madu ye dengan fresh oren..

Miss EX : awak, betul ke nak belanja nie?

Che Deen : betul la, takkan saya bawak awak datang jual ikan..haha

Miss EX : haha.. ok dear.. waiter, give me chicken chop and fries ok,
with honeydew cocktail..

Che Deen : *dalam hati (amboi, baru 2 minggu kenal, dah jadi minah saleh, makan pun western, speaking pulak tu kat kedai camni, mentang2 aku baru wat keluar duit, kau main bedal je order ye)

Pelayan : ok, dalam 15 minit makanan cik sampai ye..

30 minit kemudian
Che Deen : awak, tak makan nasi ke?

Miss EX : em, saya diet la..

Che Deen : *dalam hati lagi (diet ape benda la minah nie, dah kurus pun masih kurus lagi, nak jadi model kat makmal biologi je ape, tergantung kaler putih dalam makmal)

Miss EX : eh awak, cuba tengok mamat tu.. eh2, muka dia sama macam awak la, tubuh pun sama cuma dia single kot..haha

Che Deen : awak tau tak, awak cakap macam tu, awak cuba sama kan saya dengan dia, perlu ke awak nilai dia dan cuba sama kan saya dengan dia?

Miss EX : ape pulak tiba2 je tinggi suara nie? dah memang betul sama, awak nak salah kan saya ke? dah memang sama, kalau tiba2 mamat tu ajak saya keluar, mesti la saya keluar sebab muka awak dengan dia sama..

Che Deen : baru 2 minggu kenal awak dah macam nie? pusing2.. ok la awak, saya jenis tak suka berleter panjang dan direct to the point.. awak makan la chicken chop dengan cocktail awak tu, berlagak la jadi minah saleh ke, jadi la ape pun.. saya tak kisah dah.. aku bayar part aku, kau bayar part kau..

Miss Ex : *duk perhati beg tangan dia, cari ape benda entah.. pastu merayu kat aku sebab tertinggal purse dia..

Che Deen : dah la, aku tak suka orang macam kau, 2 minggu sebelum nie ok je, aku lagi suka kenal minah 2 minggu lepas.. (gedebush! Che Deen letak RM10 atas meja, pastu blah)

TAMAT

ok dah, nie je cerita lama yang Che Deen ingat.. biasa la, cinta monyet kan =P
dan ape kata korang?

Scallop?

Setiap kali tengok Top Chef kat Astro Diva mesti akan ada masakan yang menggunakan kekapis.. kekapis atau dalam Bahasa Inggeris ialah scallop.. bila tanya kawan apa benda kekapis tu, dia pun tak tahu.. so, en.google to the rescue la.. hasil carian.. nie lah rupa kekapis...

sumber gambar: Jurnal Rasa

once upon a time.. (macam baca buku cerita dongeng la pulak..haha)
while I was doing some reading on dialectology and the effects of dialects on English language learning, I discovered one striking feature in Kelantan dialect that amazed me – double consonants.. for example, /mmari/ meaning ‘almari’ (locker).. notice that consonant ‘m’ is doubled at the beginning of the word ‘mmari’.. yes, you are right – double consonants only exist at the beginning of a word..

Prof Nik Safiah Karim, in her master’s thesis in 1965, called this feature a long consonant.. she claimed that long consonants do not contrast meanings, which I totally DISAGREE (I will show you more examples soon).. after all, her data were impressionistic in nature, not experimental (what do you expect in 1965?)..

43 years later, Dr. Adi Yasran Abdul Aziz and Prof Zaharani Ahmad, in their recent paper in 2008, called this feature a geminate onset.. they claimed that geminate on sets can be likened to mora (linguistic) phenomena in Japanese.. very interesting.. I would love to investigate their points in my phonetic lab..

now, to prove that Prof Nik Safiah’s theory is wrong, I have come out with the following hypothesis – double consonants DO contrast meanings.. plus, double consonants can also suggest some changes in grammatical structures as well.. here are 6 ways double consonants can do wonders in our speech:

1. Two Different Meanings
2. Nouns vs. Adjectives
3. Nouns vs. Prepositional Phrase
4. Adjectives vs. Imperative verbs
5. Neutral Verbs vs. ‘Accidental’ Verbs
6. Neutral Verbs vs. Progressive Verbs

okay, enough talk, here are the real examples (the one below each pair has double consonants):

1. Two Different Meanings

/mari/ (v. come)
/mmari/ (n. locker)

/tuboh/ (n. body)
/ttuboh/ (adj. fat)

/katok/ (v. hit)
/kkatok/ (n. frog)

/namo/ (n. name)
/nnamo/ (n. full moon)

/jawi/ (n. Arabic character)
/jjawi/ (v. circumcise)

2. Nouns vs. Adjectives

/minyok/ (n. oil)
/mminyok/ (adj. oily)

/peloh/ (n. sweat)
/ppeloh/ (adj. sweaty)

/doso/ (n. sin)
/ddoso/ (adj. sinful)

/kube/ (v. mess up)
/kkube/ (adj. messed up)

/bini/ (n. wife)
/bbini/ (adj. married)

3. Nouns vs. Prepositional Phrase

/kiri/ (n. left)
/kkiri/ (pp. to the left)

/kane/ (n. right)
/kkane/ (pp. to the right)

/keda/ (n. malls)
/kkeda/ (pp. at/to the malls)

/kapong/ (n. village)
/kkapong/ (pp. in/to the village)

/dapo/ (n. kitchen)
/ddapo/ (pp. at/ to the kitchen)

4. Adjectives vs. Imperative verbs
/cepak/ (adj. fast)
/ccepak/ (v. make it faster)

/koho/ (adj. slow)
/kkoho/ (v. make it slower)

/panje/ (adj. long)
/ppanje/ (v. make it longer)

/pendek/ (adj. short)
/ppendek/ (v. make it shorter)

/kure/ (adj. less)
/kkure/ (v. make it lesser)

5. Neutral Verbs vs. ‘Accidental’ Verbs
/kecing/ (v. urinate)
/kkecing/ (v. accidentally urinate)

/tido/ (v. sleep)
/ttido/ (v. accidentally sleep)

/tuka/ (v. exchange)
/ttuka/ (v. accidentally exchange)

/koci/ (v. lock)
/kkoci/ (v. accidentally lock)

/soyok/ (v. tear)
/ssoyok/ (v. accidentally tear)

6. Neutral Verbs vs. Progressive Verbs
/masok/ (v. cook)
/mmasok/ (v. is cooking)

/baco/ (v. read)
/bbaco/ (v. is reading)

/jaek/ (v. sew)
/jjaek/ (v. is sewing)

/gosok/ (v. iron)
/ggosok/ (v. is ironing)

/basoh/ (v. wash)
/bbasoh/ (v. is washing)

did I see someone smiling? as a native speaker of Kelantan dialect, I amused myself with this discovery.. personally, I think double consonant is one of the most fascinating and distinctive features in Kelantan dialect
just like QALQALAH la in reading Quran
because it has various ‘imbedded’ functions that can contrast meanings and grammatical structures (just by lengthening the first consonants – amazing!)

so my dear Kelantanese brothers and sisters, do tell me if I’m wrong.. I would love to hear it from true speakers of Kelantan dialect out there. to other would like to share about their dialect, any similarity or something else, please share at the comment ok? =)
Acu royak deh!
